Improv, officially known as improvisational theater, is a form of theater in which most, if not all of what is performed is unplanned or unscripted. Participants often have a common set of principles, like don’t reject ideas, say “yes” and then add more to the idea.  Improv is often used to train actors for stage and television. But it can also be a helpful teaching tool in the classroom because it helps with developing communication skills, creative problem solving, and supportive team-work abilities.

Cottonwood High School has an improv club, which meets during lunch on Tuesdays, and Thursdays.  The improv club encourages people to come and watch. You can also check http://www.cwoodtheatre.com/ for performance dates. The club’s captains are Lillie Congram and Paige Ney. Improv club is full of funny people and actors.

Colt Roundup had the pleasure of interviewing two improv club members, Grace Stewart and Sophia Morrill. Grace joined improv to “grow as an actor.” Sophia noted that she “wanted to try something new and learn a new skill.” Grace’s favorite part of improv is being able to become a new character, while Sophia’s is watching the audience’s reactions to the things improv does. Improv may not seem like it, but it can be hard. Grace mentioned that the hardest part is “pushing myself out of my comfort zone.” Sophia dared to say the hardest part is “coming up with stuff on the spot, especially when you’re working with someone else.”

Improv at Cottonwood provides a safe space, where participants can come out and grow as an actor. Improv forms friendships and bonds with other players. Improv challenges you and improves you.
